Journey Overview

OM will be partnering with the local Church to share the gospel on the Isle of Lewis. We want to share the true hope of Christ with people of all ages on Scotland's beautiful Outer Hebrides.

Under 18's are welcome to join with parental consent and accompanied by a responsible adult.

You will be required to have a police background check for volunteering with children, which may cost an additional £15. If you are resident in the UK you can apply now at https://www.uk.om.org/short-term-mission-application-form

What To Expect

After arriving on the Saturday, you will eat dinner together, brief on the mission, and get to know each other. Then on the Sunday, you will worship at the host churches and enjoy fellowship together. Monday will be a day of evangelism training in the morning and outreach in the afternoon. You will then spend four days in your teams doing different types of outreach.

We hope to have opportunities for personal evangelism, music and sport events, children & youth ministry, and other events throughout the week which volunteers will help with.

The week will culminate in a family friendly Ceilidh on the last evening (traditional music and dance).

Please note: some details of this plan may change depending on local circumstances and numbers of volunteers.

Participant Profile

Age Range: 18-99

We need people who love Jesus, know His gospel, and want to share it with others. Team members should be energetic and friendly. The isles are bi-lingual with Scottish Gaelic and English. However, a good grasp of English will be sufficient for communication.

This outreach is in a rural location with variable weather so be prepared to change plans if the weather does change and be equipped for wet and dry.

Any volunteers with particular gifts, e.g. music, evangelistic talks, art outreach, etc we will find opportunities to use them during the week if we are informed in advance. Volunteers may be asked to share their testimony, but no-one will be required to speak at a public event.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will there be accommodation provided?

You could be staying with local families, church manses, holiday homes or a church hall. You may be asked to share a room with people of the same sex.

There are a small number of double beds which married couples can use but we can't guarantee this as it depends how many couples join. For families, adults and children may need to share a room.

Some accommodation will have Wi-Fi but this is not guaranteed. All accommodation will have showers available. You may be required to bring a sleeping bag.

Will there be food provided?

Meals and snacks will be provided by the hosts. We can cater for vegetarians. Please discuss with us in advance if you have allergies to see if we will be able to accommodate your requirements.

Do I need to make my own travel arrangements?

You need to arrange your own travel to Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, on the 10th August and arrange your travel home on the 17th August 2024.

You will be collected from Stornoway, either the airport (SYY) or ferry port, and driven to Carloway for the outreach then dropped back off in Stornoway on the departure day. More travel information will be available upon acceptance.

What should my health condition be like?

A basic level of physical fitness will be needed for walking between houses.

Church buildings are accessible by flat floors or ramps. However, we cannot guarantee local houses are wheelchair friendly so please let us know if this is a requirement and we will see what we can do.

Do I need a visa?

UK Visa needed for some nationalities. See: www.gov.uk/check-uk-visa
